Dentsply Sirona CEREC Primemill Milling Unit Financing

Same-day crowns end the two-appointment loop. The CEREC Primemill is Dentsply Sirona's current-generation milling unit, designed as the natural partner to the Primescan intraoral scanner, and it completes the chairside CAD/CAM workflow by moving a scanned and designed restoration from software to a finished porcelain, zirconia, or composite block in a single appointment. The Primemill uses a 5-axis milling motion to achieve the detail and margin accuracy that ceramic restorations require, and the turnaround time per unit (typically under fifteen minutes for a standard crown in CAMplete material) makes same-day dentistry a realistic clinical model rather than an aspirational one.

A new Primemill is typically priced priced roughly $35k–$50k on its own, but it is rarely purchased alone. The full CEREC workflow, Primescan plus Primemill plus CEREC software license, runs $100,000 to $150,000 as a bundled package, which is exactly the deal size our program handles most efficiently.

Primemill Capabilities and Material Range

The Primemill mills in 5 axes, which gives it access to geometry that 4-axis units cannot reach cleanly. Undercut margins, complex crown-lengthening anatomy, and posterior bridge connectors all benefit from the additional axis of motion. The material range covers the full spectrum of CAD/CAM blocks used in chairside dentistry:

  • Lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS e.max CAD is the most common)
  • Monolithic zirconia (including multilayer and gradient blocks)
  • Composite resin (Vita Enamic and similar polymer-infiltrated ceramics)
  • PMMA for provisional restorations and denture teeth

The Primemill connects to the SpeedFire sintering unit for zirconia cases that require crystallization after milling, and it works within the CEREC Speed workflow that Dentsply Sirona introduced to allow faster crystallization cycles on specific material combinations. For practices that offer same-day zirconia, the Primemill plus SpeedFire combination is the current standard.

Practices building the full chairside loop from scan to delivery should start with our CEREC CAD/CAM financing overview, which covers the complete system. The CEREC MC XL financing page covers the older-generation milling unit that the Primemill replaced, useful if you are considering a refurbished MC XL at a lower price point. The Dentsply Sirona brand financing page covers the full Dentsply Sirona equipment range.

Practices Buying the Primemill

The Primemill buyer is typically a restorative-focused general practice doing enough crown and bridge volume to justify the chairside investment. The math works most clearly when the practice is doing eight or more single-unit restorations per week. At that volume, the elimination of laboratory fees, the two-visit reduction to one, and the ability to deliver a permanent restoration the same day compound into a return that covers the milling unit payment in a reasonable timeframe.

Prosthodontic practices use the Primemill for complex full-mouth rehabilitation cases where accurate fit on multiple units needs to be verified and adjusted chairside before the patient leaves. Milling in the office gives the prosthodontist immediate control over the restoration without waiting for a lab cycle. Prosthodontic practices that also do implant-supported prosthetics increasingly prefer the scan-to-mill workflow for implant crowns on internal-connection fixtures.

Cosmetic practices that offer same-day porcelain veneers and direct ceramic bonding as premium services also use the Primemill. Patients who schedule cosmetic days expect that the restoration happens in one appointment, and the Primemill makes that expectation achievable. Cosmetic dentistry practices that build their appointment model around same-day delivery find the Primemill a core enabler of that service.

Financing the Primemill as Part of a CEREC System

Most Primemill deals are bundled with the Primescan and the full CEREC software license. We finance the complete bundle on a single invoice, which is the most efficient structure. The bundled package regularly lands priced roughly $100k–$150k, and our application-only process covers deals to approximately $400,000 without requiring tax returns.

For practices that already own a Primescan and are adding the Primemill separately, we finance the milling unit as a standalone transaction. That deal may fall priced roughly $35k–$50k, depending on accessories and the SpeedFire sintering unit inclusion. Deals below $50,000 fall below our standard minimum, but tell us the full purchase situation and we can often find a path.

Term lengths for a Primemill or full CEREC bundle typically run 48 to 72 months. Practices that want to accelerate the paydown and minimize total interest choose 48 months. Practices that need to preserve monthly cash flow during a buildout or staffing expansion lean toward 60 or 72 months. Either works, and the payment difference across the term range is significant enough to be worth modeling before you commit.

For practices that want the flexibility to upgrade to the next generation of CEREC milling without owning the current unit at end of term, an FMV lease is an alternative to a standard loan. Our FMV versus dollar buyout lease comparison explains the tradeoffs in plain language.

Questions

Can I finance the Primemill alongside a SpeedFire sintering unit as one package?

Yes. The Primemill and SpeedFire sintering unit are commonly purchased together for zirconia workflows, and both can be included on the same dealer invoice and financed as a single transaction. The combined cost of both units fits well within our application-only program.

I already have a CEREC MC XL. Is it worth refinancing that unit and rolling in the Primemill?

If the MC XL is paid off and has remaining fair market value, a sale-leaseback or cash-out structure on the existing unit can generate capital that offsets the Primemill purchase. If the MC XL still has a loan balance, the equity position determines whether a rollover structure makes sense.

Does the Primemill's milling speed make a clinical difference compared to the MC XL?

Yes. The Primemill is meaningfully faster than the MC XL for standard crown milling times, which matters when multiple restorations are planned for the same appointment or when the practice runs a high-volume same-day schedule. Dentsply Sirona cites typical crown mill times under 15 minutes for Primemill versus longer cycles on the MC XL.

Can I deduct the Primemill under Section 179 in the year I place it in service?

Section 179 allows deduction of qualifying equipment placed in service during the tax year, and financed equipment qualifies. Your accountant should confirm the current limits and your practice's eligibility, but in general, the Primemill qualifies as depreciable business equipment under Section 179.

What happens if the milling unit needs a major repair during the loan term?

Maintenance and repair costs are operational expenses separate from the financing. If the repair cost is large, some practices explore financing a repair or the purchase of a replacement unit, but routine and major maintenance are not typically part of the equipment financing structure. An extended warranty purchased at the time of original financing can protect against major repair costs.
